(Quick Crusader note- official final tally, tie between TJ and SJ in shuffle for this week- huzzah!)
The Josh-Here we go around one more time:
1. Devendra Banhart - Little Boys
Cool song. I like Devendra, but he's a bit overrated. He's good, and he's a talented guy, but I'd say that a handful of stuff on this album is just okay. This song is one of the better ones though. Very bluesy, very old school. Plus he got to hang out with Beck in that magazine I have. About halfway through this goes into a 60s style shimmy, and it gets much better. Haunting vocals in the back too. But the lyrics are weird, he talks about "oh so many little boys I wanna marry". Hmm, I wonder what this one is about.
2. Four Tet - Joy ft. Percee P
I heart Four Tet. This is a remixed version of one of his tracks that he did and had the great Percee P rap on. I love Four Tet because all of his stuff is really big on percussion and he usually throws weird electronic sounds and instruments in the mix. Four Tet is Kieran Hebden, who used to be in a band called Fridge with Adem Ilhan, and Adem Ilhan went on to record under the name Adem. You guys might remember Adem because he has a song called Launch Yourself, also the title of the first volume of my recent mixes. Great track, great transition too. Towards the end kicks into a funky bassline and the cymbals calm down a little bit.
3. Chris Thile - How To Grow A Woman From The Ground
I originally purchased this album for the Strokes and White Stripes covers on it, which are fantastic. But the rest of the album in places is a bit generic in terms of the bluegrass style he does. This track is one of the standouts, though. Nice little plucking mandolin and fiddle, sad melody. Almost European sounding in its melody. Fantastic song. Chris Thile has a great voice.
4. Panda Bear - Untitled 1
Okay, you guys know now, especially you Chriz, that I am an absolute junkie for anything Animal Collective. This album is far different from his new release that we've all been jamming to. It's all acoustic, none of the songs have titles, some are instrumental, and some just feature Panda Bear moaning a melody along to the song. The latter being the case with this track. Drug influenced? Probably. But still kind of sweet. Or annoying, depending on how you look at it.
5. John Fogerty - Have You Ever Seen The Rain?
Whoa! Even Chris just noted what an amazing transition that was. What can I say about this song, truly one of the greatest songs ever written. Fogerty, you rock, don't never chane.
6. The Clash - Police and Thieves
Uh huh. Yea, iPod, you did just rock my balls off. What's that? Oh, you giggled sheepishly. You little devil you. What a fucking song. Always makes me think of Owen Wilson in that gray suit driving to that weird house in his sportscar in Royal Tenenbaums to score drugs.
7. Dr. Dog - The World May Never Know
Ohhhhh sweet syrupy Dr. Dog. Does it get any sweeter? I think not. The doo wop background vocals, echoey drums, plodding piano. Great great song. Like Chriz said in a previous shuffle, quickly becoming one of my favorite modern bands. They're not afraid to go really McCartney/Beatles-esque, and really sappy, and I appreciate that.
8. J Dilla - Track 16
I wish Dilla would've titled these beats. This beat sounds like the Nutcracker meets Dragnet. Dragnut, i title this. Really fucking ill, from the beat GOD Dilla. RIP.
9. Tom Waits - The Return Of Jackie And Judy
You guys may also know of my extreme Waits devotion. A dirty Waits rocker, great vocals, great stomp to it. You really can't go wrong with Tom Waits. This is from the new Tom Waits Orphans box, B-sides new tracks and rarities. I could really jam to this one.
10. Roc C. & Oh No - Louder(Prod. by J Dilla)
Eh, the one stinker in my whole bunch. This is a track off of Donuts and these two doofuses decided to rap over it and ruin it. Oh No, stick to the beats. Roc C., go stick to your moms.
Well, a pretty damn good shuffle until the end, but still.
